Monday, February 04, 2019. *(B, L, D). DELHI

Your flight will arrive at the Delhi International Airport. We’ll meet you outside of customs and transfer you to the hotel, where we will spend three nights at the LE MERIDIAN, NEW DELHI.

Tuesday, February 05, 2019. (B, L, D). DELHI

Today is your first day in Delhi, India. We will begin our sightseeing of ‘Qutub Minar.’ It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, built in 1210. We will walk in the Qutub complex to begin photographing. Our tour will continue and then we’ll stop for lunch. We will cover the New Delhi area, where all the government official buildings are. We will drive slowly around to take pictures of the government buildings, designed by Sir Lutyens, visiting Rajpath, the Kings Road leading up from the India Gate to, the war memorial arch, up to the imposing presidential palace (the Rashtrapati Bhawan).

Today’s tour will consist of some walking and driving.

Wednesday, February 06, 2019. (B, L, D). DELHI

Today we will have a heritage walking tour in Old Delhi. We will start with Humayun’s Tomb; a century after its construction, Humayun’s tomb inspired the construction of the more famous Taj Mahal. Lunch en route. We will continue to The RAJ GHAT, site of the cremation of two of India’s most revered leaders, Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, and Indira Gandhi (no relation to the saintly man). We will walk in the Old Delhi, the capital of kingdoms and empires. We will visit Red Fort, and from there we will walk towards Chandini Chawlk. We will visit many wonderful sites – Dariba Kalan (the silver market), Kinari Bazar (a wedding market), Sikh and Hindu Temples, a street food area, a spice market, and a few other hidden gems. This is the most picturesque site in Delhi. We call it the heart of Delhi. We can also use local rickshaws, through the center.

Today’s tour will consist of walking and some driving.

Thursday, February 07, 2019. (B, L, D). DELHI – SAMODE – JAIPUR

Today we will drive south west of Delhi, to arrive at Samode Village. We will have lunch en route. In Samode, we will do a safari by Jeeps to experience local village life. After the village safari, we will have high tea in Samode Bagh. This evening we will visit Samode Palace, have our dinner at the Palace, and depart after dinner for Jaipur. We will stay four nights in Jaipur at the TRIDENT HOTEL.

Today’s tour will consist of mostly driving on a highway, some walking, and some jeep safari.


Friday, February 08, 2019. (B, L, D). JAIPUR

In the early morning, we will go to Jaipur’s landmark Hawa Mahal, or “Palace of Winds.” It was built in 1799, to enable women of the court to watch street processions, while remaining unseen behind finely screened windows. We will visit part of the City Palace Museums, Mubarak Mahal, and the Hall of the Private Audience. Next will be a private visit of the residential area of the Royal family. We’ll also visit the unique Jantar Mantar  Observatory to see a total of 18 instruments built by Maharaja Jai Singh, many of them his own inventions, between 1728 and 1734. We will have lunch in a traditional restaurant. This evening we will travel by horse carriages to experience a lively Indian wedding after an early dinner at the hotel. We will be attending a traditional function where the Bride’s family welcomes the groom and his family. All family members meet the bride and groom and have photos taken with them. We will introduce you to both families, and students will have their willing participation to take pictures during the ceremonies.

Today’s tour will consist of mostly walking.


Saturday, February 09, 2019. (B, L, D). JAIPUR

Today we drive northeast to stop first in Amer, the ancient Capital of Maharajas of Jaipur, where we begin sightseeing at the Amer Fort. Among the places you’ll see today are the Palace Complex, with its lofty Hall of Public Audience, and the dazzling Seesh Mahal, a private chamber of former Kings and Queens, and Sukh Mahal, where the marble rooms were cooled by water cascading through fine perforations in the center of the wall – an early and very efficient system of air conditioning. After the Amer Fort visit, we will go to a private farm to experience an elephant ride in nature. We will get a chance to feed these elephants and have enough time to take pictures of these beautiful creatures without other tourists’ interruptions. We will have our lunch at the farm. This evening we will go to Nahar Garh Fort, at the top of the hill overlooking Jaipur, to have an amazing view of the city. Dinner at a restaurant.

Today’s tour will consist of little driving, mostly walking, an elephant ride and jeep ride.

Sunday, February 10, 2019. (B, L, D). JAIPUR

In the early morning, we will go to Galtaji, also known as monkey valley. The site consists of a series of temples built into a narrow crevice in the ring of hills that surrounds Jaipur. Today we will have a heritage walk around Jaipur, The Pink City, photographing the architecture, flower, vegetable and spice markets. Lunch in the city. This afternoon you will have time to do some shopping, as Jaipur is described as “a shopper’s paradise” by many travel writers. This evening we will have dinner with an Indian family, where we will have a cooking demonstration and talk about Indian spices.

Today’s tour will consist of some driving, and mostly walking.

Monday, February 11, 2019. (B, L, D). JAIPUR – AGRA

This morning, we will drive first to visit the former capital of the great Moghul Emperor Akbar, Fatehpur Sikri, now a ghost city. We visit the Royal Palace, Jodha Bai’s Palace, and Birbal’s Mansion. Lunch en route. We continue our journey to arrive in Agra, where you stay two nights at the hotel ITC Mughal. Dinner at the hotel.   

Today’s tour will have driving on a highway and walking in Fatehpur Sikri.

Tuesday, February 12, 2019. (B, L, D). AGRA

Early morning, we will visit the most alluring monument, The Taj Mahal. Built of white marble, with inlaid precious stones on its facades shining like multi-colored garlands, it is one of mankind’s greatest creations. This afternoon we will visit the Agra Fort built by the great Moghul emperor Akbar and augmented by successive emperors until the final emperor, Aurangzeb, who imprisoned his father Shah Jahan here. From there you can catch a fabulous view of the TAJ MAHAL across River Yamuna. We will go to Mehtab Bagh to take some sunset pictures of the Taj Mahal. We will have our Gala Farewell dinner at a gourmet restaurant. Overnight at the hotel.

Today’s tour will consist of mostly walking.


Wednesday. February 13, 2019. (B, L). AGRA – DELHI – U.S.A.

We will visit the Itmad-ud-Daula, described as a ‘jewel box’ or sometimes called the “Baby Taj,” built between 1622 and 1628 AD. This mausoleum was commissioned by Shah Jahan’s mother Nur Jahan. Lunch en route. We will continue our drive to Delhi to arrive at the airport to catch our flight back home.

Equipment Notes

  • At Taj Mahal, due to security, tripods are not allowed.
  • Any cameras used for making documentaries or commercial short films will require special permission from Govt. of India, which we must apply at least 120 days in advance!
  • The Hindu wedding will be at night, and close-up flash is not permitted. Therefore, please plan to bring a fast lens for these locations, minimum 2.8 but 2.0 or faster is better for some situations, including indoors at palaces, etc.
  • For animal parks, a long 200-400mm lens is suggested.
