In The Other America 1969-2014, social documentary photographer Ken Light reflects on his work in the context of the history of documentary photography, his own influences, and shares his philosophy and process on image making. Light also discusses the nuts and bolts evolution of his project’s development – how he has published eight books, from concept and funding, through the publishing process, to exhibition and promotion

Ken Light has worked as a freelance documentary photographer, focusing on social issues facing America for over 40 years. His work has been published in eight books, including Coal Hollow, Delta Time, To The Promised Land, With These Hands, Texas Death Row and most recently Valley of Shadows and Dreams. He is also the author of the text Witness in Our Time: Lives of Working Documentary photographers, now in its second edition. His work has been in numerous photo essays in magazines, newspapers and a variety of media (electronic & film), and presented in exhibitions worldwide including a one-person show at the International Center for Photography (NYC), Oakland Museum of California, S.E. Museum of Photography, Visual Studies Workshop, Smith College Art Museum, Visa pour L’image Perpignan (France) and the San Jose Museum of Art. He is a Professor and curator of the Center for Photography at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California Berkeley and was the 2012 Laventhol Visiting Professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Ken is also a co-founder of Fotovision, and the International Fund for Documentary photography.
