Architecture & Urban Landscape

Explore the urban landscape and architecture through photography.
with Bryan Hewitt

Students will explore how to understand and articulate stories about architecture and the urban environment by creating a series of photographs.

This workshop is designed for photographers with a working knowledge of manual exposure settings who are interested in architecture. It is for people who want to go deeper with storytelling through images to understand their subject more completely.

The 8 sessions in this course will include both on-location photography field trips guided by the instructor to local places of interest and in-class critique sessions where students will be able to receive feedback on their work in a supportive environment. Students will learn technical skills for controlling perspective and understanding how to better photograph buildings. They will also practice and deepen their visioning and storytelling abilities.

Instructor Bio

Bryan Hewitt

Bryan Hewitt is an artist and Co-Owner of the photography and film production company
Hewitt Visuals. He has been working professionally as a photographer and teaching
photography for over 20 years. His artwork explores connection to place, social commentary and mythology. It has been shown locally, nationally and internationally, including at the de Young Museum, the Boston Short Film Festival, and as the Best Documentary award-winner at TimeLess Shorts Film Festival in Oakland. His work as part of Hewitt Visuals has been made for many local and regional clients, including UC Berkeley, OpenScope Studio, UCSF, and the New York Times.

Bryan started photographing architecture using film and 4×5 view cameras. Most of his
professional work is now done with digital cameras, but he continues to use film and film-
digital hybrid processes for his artwork. Regardless of the tools, he is interested in cultivating a thoughtful practice of making images that emphasizes a careful, intuitive approach and attention to detail.
