Exploring the Expressive Landscape

Explore how photography can move beyond documentation and into interpretation.
with Austin Halpern

Students will explore how observation, intentionality, and technical tools can work together to create more expressive landscape imagery. Instruction combines classroom discussions, field sessions, creative exercises, and group critiques.

This workshop is designed for photographers with a working understanding of camera controls and exposure settings. Perfect for intermediate photographers looking to deepen their creativity and more advanced photographers seeking to develop their personal visual language.

Through two guided field sessions in different locations, Austin will invite the group to make their own expressive photographs. During these outings, each photographer will receive individualized guidance.

Instructor Bio

Austin Halpern

As an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, Austin Halpern frequently carries his photography gear into captivating destinations. However, he is a firm believer that you can create an equally beautiful image in your backyard as you can on a mountaintop. While Austin loves a classic landscape of a recognizable landmark, he often opts to shoot abstract compositions that depict a feeling of place rather than a direct snapshot of it. Sometimes, this means playing with shutter speeds and capturing the movement of water. Other times, this means using long lenses to compress space and fill the frame. He often revisits destinations and believes that the best pictures come with time and knowledge of a place. For Austin, subtle fluctuations in light, the flow of the tide, or the placement of a cloud can make all the difference in an image.

Austin has loved learning from and teaching alongside brilliant artists at Santa Fe
Photographic Workshops and Maine Media Workshops + College. His photographs are
included in numerous private collections and have been displayed at a variety of
galleries, art festivals, and small businesses across the country. He is currently
represented by the District Gallery in Shaker Heights, Ohio, where he grew up. Austin
and his wife, Jordana, have been living in San Francisco for the last few years and just
moved to Marin where they are looking to put down roots.
