Top 10 Instagram Accounts to Follow by Bay Area Photographers

Need some #inspiration? Here are our 10 favorite Instagram accounts from Bay Area photographers (and one SoCal) that we follow—and why you should too.

At The Image Flow we pride ourselves in providing inspiration for photographers, but once in a while, we need a little inspiration ourselves and we often turn to our Instagram feed. We love Instagram—not just because it’s a social media site that thrives wholly around photography, but because of the variety and quality of work available. Read on to discover our top Instagram accounts (in no particular order), all from by Bay Area photographers and one photographer based in Southern California—just because his work was too good not to pass on.

Noel Barnhurst is a food photographer with a studio in Emeryville. No matter what he’s shooting—be it a hot red pepper, a plate of octopus, a half-eaten grilled cheese sandwich still in the cast iron pan, or a spoonful of sea salt—his images stand out because they’re so alive, often in the moment where preparation and consummation overlap.

Rudi Dundas is best known for her work focusing on drinking water issues in East Africa and India with the Blue Planet Network. Her Instagram account includes startling portraits of the people affected by the lack of clean drinking water including the Samburu and Maasai Mara in Kenya, and also reveals her talent for taking eerie photographs of the Marin County landscape.

Niniane Kelley is a recent discovery for us here at The Flow, and a soon-to-be TIF instructor. Her Instagram feed is dominated by a variety of alternative process photographs along side quirky images of a blue dinosaur-about-town in San Francisco.

We’re not going to lie: We were a little sad when Taralynn Lawton announced she was leaving The Image Flow to focus full-time on her photography, but we love following along with her career via her stunning Instagram feed. Her fine art, wedding, portrait, and fashion photography combines the best of her modern esthetic and romantic sensibilities.

Dirk Dallas is a drone photographer based in southern California. His work is highly symmetrical, textured, and alive. Dirk shares tips for drone photography on his website fromwhereidrone.com and in his new book How to Find Awesome Photography Locations.

Hendrik Paul is our favorite black-and-white landscape photographer. His mostly in-color Instagram account shows the method behind the madness via both photos and videos of his process.

Kirk Crippens has made a name for himself documenting the residents of underprivileged neighborhoods like Bayview Hunters Point in San Francisco among others and making portraits of the neurotic and eccentric. His Instagram feed is a hodgepodge of a little bit of everything, from his published work to whatever random thing he’s come across that day.

Adam Decker is the founder of the Instagramers North Bay group and regularly organizes Instameets in San Francisco, Sonoma, Napa, and Marin. His Instagram feed is dominated by wine country landscapes and a variety of sunset and sunrise images.

Whenever we need to remind ourselves that the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the world’s best places to live, we scroll through Dan Kurtzman’s work. Dan shoots for Getty Images and also curates the Instagram account @wildbayarea.

Richard Koci Hernandez is an Emmy award-winning video and multimedia producer, a former San Jose Mercury News photojournalist whose work earned him two Pulitzer Prize nominations, and a member of the UC Berkeley School of Journalism faculty. His highly curated Instagram feed, almost entirely in black and white, is dominated by edgy abstracts and urban portraits.

And of course… make sure to follow @theimageflow on Instagram too!
