The health crisis Ed Kashi encountered among sugar cane workers in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, last year was stark. Over the course of two weeks he spent in the area, there was a funeral every day for workers who had died of chronic kidney disease. Though he had gone there on a commission for a nongovernmental organization that was helping the workers, he left convinced that he had to continue his documentation on his own.
