This workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced photographers with a strong
interest in nature and wildlife.
Participants will refine their field technique for photographing wildlife while exploring
advanced approaches to composition, exposure, and equipment selection specific to
fast‑moving and unpredictable subjects. The curriculum includes an in‑depth
examination of the ethics of nature and wildlife photography, emphasizing respectful
practices that prioritize animal welfare and habitat conservation.
Instruction combines classroom discussion with two guided field sessions in Marin,
where Nick leads the group to locate and photograph local wildlife. During these
outings, each photographer works independently while receiving individualized
guidance drawn from Nick’s extensive experience in nature photography.
Following each field session, students are expected to process a selected image file
and present an 11×17‑inch print for critique the following week. Critiques are conducted
exclusively from prints, with student‑priced Canson Photosatin prints available at 12
dollars each through The Image Flow.

Instructor Bio

Nick Fain is a photographer and digital artist, living in Marin for over 30 years. He opened his first commercial studio in downtown San Francisco in the early 1990s. Clients were ad agencies, design firms, national book and magazine publishers. He operated one of the first independent digital studios to use Photoshop 1.0. These were exciting times.
But home has been Marin, at the foot of Mt Tamalpais. Nick has spent most of his free time hiking, biking & photographing the hills of Marin. He has traveled and explored the western states in awe of a region where high desert & snow capped peaks can be visited in the same day.
Since 2010, the visual focus has been on nature & wildlife. What could be more fulfilling than shadowing an adult bobcat as he stalks his prey? Or perhaps visiting a bald eagle’s nest that no one else has seen? In our crowded and turbulent world, having wild nature just over the hill is an irresistible attraction. It is the destination.
