Learn photography 101 in this six-session photography class, where you will explore everything from manual camera settings to editing in Adobe Lightroom Classic. 

In this six-session class, you will learn how to: 

  • Take control of your camera’s manual mode
  • Understand how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together for the perfect exposure 
  • Build an organized workflow using Adobe Lightroom Classic 
  • Develop your vision by practicing regularly through creative assignments 
  • Improve your photography skills through personalized feedback in weekly critique sessions 

No prior photography experience is necessary–just come ready to learn in a fun, supportive environment!

In-Person Class Schedule

Day 1: Reviewing camera settings and manual mode operation. The 1st assignment is given—due on Day 2

Important: Do NOT import your images into Lightroom, we will do this together in class on Day 2

Day 2: Adobe Lightroom Classic Introduction. The 2nd assignment is given—due on Day 3

Day 3: Critique and feedback is given on the 2nd assignment. Introduction to basic image-developing techniques. The 3rd assignment given—due on Day 4

Day 4: Critique and feedback is given on the 3rd assignment. Continuation of basic image-developing techniques. The 4th assignment given—due on Day 5

Day 5: Critique and feedback are given on the 4th assignment, Introduction to Local Adjustments. The 5th assignment given—due on Day 6

Day 6: Critique and feedback are given on the 5th assignment. Final review on Lightroom Classic Software.

Instructor Bios

 

Instructor and Master Printer at The Image FlowNathan Lomas

Nathan hails from Buffalo, NY. He developed his passion for photography at the tender age of five when his father gave him a Ricoh camera. He has a BFA from the College of Creative Studies in Detroit and an MFA in Imaging Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. He is a former adjunct professor at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, owns his own photo studio in Alameda where he specializes in 19th-century tintype photography, and at The Image Flow, works with digital restoration, film scanning, and printing, as well as teaching workshops and working one-on-one with clients.

 

Peter MertsPeter Merts

Peter Merts has been a photographer for 40 years, focusing on documentary, portrait, and fine art projects. His work has been published by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Economist, The Huffington Post, Newsweek Online, and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among others.

For the past 15 years, Peter has documented California’s Arts in Corrections program, visiting over 120 art classes in all 36 of California’s adult state prisons. He co-published, with Dr. Larry Brewster, the book Paths of Discovery: Art Practice and Its Impact in California Prisons (now in its 2nd edition).

Peter’s recent photography awards include the 2020 Critical Mass Top 50, and the 2021 CENTER Social Award.
